I’ve written about what it takes to be successful throughout Simple Selling. In it, I share with you all that I’ve learned about selling. Sounds too simple, doesn’t it?
The words optimism, perseverance, and knowledge can be explained in other terms – cheery, grit, and savvy, for example. Still, many believe there’s a hidden secret for success. I guess that’s why so many books on the subject are authored and/or read. I’ve included all you need to know in Simple Selling. Top salespeople agree.
Many years ago, I had a concrete step that had to be removed from the side of a house, which I was making into an office. The new entrance would be in front. The steps and landing were poured and finished sometime prior to World War II. During this period, concrete was added to sand in such abundance that the landing had the strength of a bunker. Anyway, I needed to bust it up, and because I was starting my business on a shoestring, I was going to have to do it myself. Buying or renting a jackhammer was out – too costly. So, with one heavy sledgehammer and me swinging it on and off each day for three days, I finally noticed a fine lined crack.
I’ve since forgotten exactly on which day the twelve-inch slab finally caved in, but the three things I do remember quite clearly are that I had optimism when I undertook the task, believing that if I pounded the concrete enough times, it would eventually give in. Secondly, I had the perseverance to keep at it until it did. Now, as for the knowledge, I must be truthful – I lacked in the technique of structural engineering, however, common sense told me that something had to give, eventually. I could tell you hundreds of stories about optimism, perseverance, and knowledge, but this one tells it best. Its concrete example hammers the point home.
These same three principles can influence our sons and daughters to accomplish even the simplest of tasks like tying a shoelace, to the more complex undertaking of forming a government. However, if these principles are ignored and sheer will is imposed on a person(s) to achieve a goal, then money, power, philosophy, and theology, applied singularly, or in any combination, becomes the motivator.
